Has anyone else noticed the alarming growth of the number of people willing to divulge every facet of their personal lives to the public, and be exhibitionists?

I'm not old, although I'm already joking about it frequently, but I can't understand how security and privacy is almost non-existent in today's world (at least in Australia).

People have stickers on their cars with all their family members. Hmm... only 2 people in your family, no dog, oh and you're all leaving your driveway... I think I'll break into your house now.

Number plates with a person's initial's and date of birth.
"Hi. My name's Kate, I'd like to cancel my service with you please."
"Sure, for identification purposes can I ask for your date of birth."
"No problemo." *snicker*

Facebook status updates
"cm. has just signed it at Lady Gagga Concert"
People publicly post their mobile numbers, date of birth, favourite animals, books, movies (which are often their password questions), and I frequently see Facebook accounts 'hacked' by their friends, repeatedly and they don't really seem to care enough to stop it.

Has anyone seen the naughty hat thing going around? Guys and girls are taking nude photos on Facebook now, and 'sometimes' hiding up their parts with a hat. It's so rampart that Facebook admins don't seem to be able to stop it. WTF happened to all responsible adults using Facebook, who would keep the younger ones in check too. Now there's young adults and teens getting in on this, like WTF?

Also, I think about 70% (or more) of people no longer care what the word "Friends" means, and just add anyone who request a Friend Invite. I'm sorry buddy/babe, I doubt you have 2500 'friends' in real life.

What the hell is going on in the world? When I was in school the internet was still developing, and mostly ruled by geeks, who had some sense of security and privacy. Now with Apple selling computers to the majority average Joe, the IQ of internet users seems to have dropped dramatically.

It just feels like the social networking has changed the mindset of how people think, and now everyone wants to compete with 'Anonymous' on a public scale, and be seen/heard, even if it means absolutely useless and pointless tweets, status updates, or forfeiting their dignity to look skanky (forgetting their Grandma has them as a Friend and will see those pics in their status feeds).

Anyone here have kids old enough to be using Facebook, YouTube, and other social media and worried WTF your kids are doing? There's obviously some ignorant and just lazy parents out there.

Yes, that's another aspect/danger of all this. Facebook was used by adults when I first started using it, and all the kids, predators and 'fake' people used mySpace. Now everyone's ditched mySpace, so kids as young as 10 are using Facebook (and I still lol when I see a pet with it's own Facebook page).

Every time I ever bother to listen to the news or read a newspaper there's something about kiddy porn or (and this really makes me say WTF) some guy is arrested for 'molesting' a child 20-50 years ago. I can understand when you're young, and reporting being abused, but waiting 20+ years, when you're a full grown man/woman, I don't get that.... anywayz that's off topic.

Kids post their mobile numbers, tell where they're going (to shops, or beach, etc) and where parties are at, post pictures of themselves smoking and drinking (underage), etc. People get fired for what they post on Facebook, yet no-one seems to do anything about personal info people post, especially children who expose themselves to dangerous people (although I admit I think the media sensationalizes how 'many' dangerous creeps are really out there).

Social engineering and hacking will be the new craze that sweeps the world in the next few years I think, and although it will ruin lives, I think it's necessary in the end to change society's mindset on security and confidentiality. People used to put passwords on their laptops and computers, yet few bother with mobile phones, despite having more stuff on their phones (credit card details, all their contacts, 'very' personal photos, etc). I can't help but think if I wanted to turn to a life of crime it would be so easy in today's society.

Lots of people put so much out there, photo's, bdays, emails, phone numbers. NO wonder spam is prolific these days

Overit - Yep thats right i really hate games but i cant stop playing them :(

Linked-In is just as bad.

At first it might have seemed a nice concept, but all sorts of seedy and bad things go on there. Easily find employees from rival companies and poach them, or stalk them for corporate espionage and social engineering attacks. Look up a potential employee and see if they have any bad employers they purposely omitted from their resume.

The amount of information people put out there is just crazy. Fewer and fewer people seems to think or care about their privacy, and in the end it's only going to empower the government to step in and say "oh, we can fix that for you, just vote us in and we'll control the internet for you" :-)

At least most gamers have some common sense and use aliases instead of real names, and email addresses that are not their real names or place of work, etc (well... most of you do)

Common sense is the nature and amount of the information you secrete, not "Oh Jesus no, you're using your real name, they're going to stalk and rape you now".

*insert Attention whore by Deadmau5 here*

Hell, i'm Gen Y and i can agree on some fronts. On FB i've only posted an email address that is completely indifferent to the one i actually use and only those who i know are added and my page is restricted to those friends only. Thats the only reason i created a page in the first place, to keep up with what my friends are doing after Yr 12. So far i've avoided any sort of trouble (no thats not an open invitation).

What people put up and tell the world is up to them, its their prerogative and they have to deal with whatever problems they draw their way.
