BIS trailing new vehicle steering, feedback needed

BIS have requested the community’s opinion on a new "experimental" steering system that uses the mouse to drive. While driving a vehicle, pointing the mouse at something will make the vehicle turn towards it as opposed to simply turning left/right. For those that have been around for a while, it will pretty much be like the old OFP steering (or should I say Arma Cold War Assault?).

At the moment it only applied to boats; however it is planned to be tested on ground vehicles shortly.

Here's what suma had to say:

Quote

Please, provide a feedback for the mouse steering improvements. We plan to extend the new "experimental" boat steering to all land vehicles, unless the feedback will be you do not like it. Note: Veterans between you may notice the new steering should resemble the Cold War Crisis vehicle steering in may aspects. The idea is you point the target and the vehicle steers to get there.

A quick FYI, if you notice some strange looking things happening around here, fear not! Freeborne and I are just mucking around with some back-end stuff that may change the appearance of things here and there. We are hoping to released a more polished version of the current website soon. Not much will change except a few changes here and there that will hopefully both look and function a bit better.

Arma 2 on the BBC

Arma 2 has been featured in a BBC article about the "blurring of reality and the virtual world". It goes on about how it is becoming more difficult to destinguish between images of real life and the gaming world. Of course, when the images are shrunk to 300x200 it does indeed become more difficult but still pretty easy. I guess it's different for us seeing as we play all the time though.

Either way, you can have a read of it here.

ToH to use Java, Arma 3 to follow

A big announcment for all those SQF experts out there, Arma 3 will be supporting Java! Thanks to SnR for spotting it.

Initially it will be going into a patch for Take on Helicopters:

Quote

Hi fellow scripters,

Initially we had hoped to release the major upgrade to our scripting technology with Patch 1.03, but we were not able to get it fully implemented in time. Therefore we're pushing the ability to use Java to the next patch

Why is this awesome™?

Using a widespread, proven and robust language with loads of documentation and tutorials.

Using IDEs such as Neatbeans and Eclipse for development and debugging.

Using Object-Oriented programming architecture and design.

Using generally much higher performance script execution.

Using many standard Java libraries instead of reinventing the wheel.

Note: this will not replace SQF scripting, so the transition should be smooth.

You can check out the original thread on the BIS forums here.

We are currently running a logo design contest to see if someone can come up with a really neat and catching logo for this site.

All entries will be posted on the forums for everyone to vote on and provide feedback. The competition is being run on 99designs.com.au and closes at the end of the week (Friday 11:30AM +10GMT).
If you have some 1337 design skillz, or know someone who does, feel free to signup to the site and submit your design(s). The winner gets $295.

For your sake, and ours, ensure you are not infringing on copyright with any graphics, etc that you include in your designs.
Also, at the end of the content a winner WILL be decided, and receive the prize money, however this does not necessarily mean we will run with the logo (we may want to edit it to suit our needs, or only use it in certain areas of the website/Teamspeak, etc)

You can follow/participate in the competition by clicking the following link:

Project Reality Beta Released

So this article is a little bit late but....

For those of you who don't know, PR: Arma 2 v0.1 was released on September 2nd to much fanfare and server crashes due to the high numbers. After the initial rush, the smoothing out of player numbers has lead to some rather enjoyable PvP games. Here's the details:

Quote

After countless hours of development, thousands of code changes and an intensive testing period, we are pleased to announce the general availability of the Project Reality: ARMA 2 v0.1 BETA modification. You can download and install the mod one of three ways. The easiest way is via a self-installer.exe. The second is to use Desura, a powerful digital distribution application. The final and most difficult way is to download a ZIP to manually install. To avoid any potential problems, we strongly advise all users to use either the self-installer.exe or Desura to install the mod.

New Features and Changes
While this release is primarily focused on BETA testing, you can still find some new Project Reality additions and features in the PR:ARMA2 v0.1 BETA release.

Unique UI overhaul.

British Soldiers (MTP).

Unique PR Gameplay Concept for ARMA 2.

Various PR game modes.

New vehicles including the Warrior IFV, Chinook, Merlin, and the Apache AH1.

v1 Basic PR Sounds FX, environment and weapons/vehicles.

PR:ARMA2 music, composed by Project Reality.

PR Statics Object Pack.

PR FX.

PR Squad Awareness HUD (SAHUD).

PR rear view Mirrors.

ARMA 3 to get TKOH Flight Model

/assets/images/stories/logo.png

Through a lonely post in the BI forum, AAF member Ryan noticed that BIS Developer "Damu" has confirmed that the Take On Helicopters flight model will be used in Arma 3. It's seems like early stages at the moment, but it's certainly exciting news for those wannabe pilots (like me).

Here's the post:

Quote

Flight model used in TKOH will be available in Arma3. We don't know if it will be presented in campaign. We didn't even try it.

There are two options:
1) TKOH FM will be available, depending on controllability for the specific difficulty levels (maybe all of them???),
2) TKOH FM will be available for modders, but disabled for campaign itself.

The decision is waiting for our FM evaluation directly in A3.

You can check out the thread here.
